Browser the Cat Narrowly Escapes Eviction

White Settlement City, Texas, might not be especially newsworthy on a day-to-day basis. But the small town made headlines when, on June 28, 2016, the eminent powers-that-be voted to evict a squatter living in the town's public library: a cat named Browser.

Fortunately, Browser had a powerful ally – White Settlement City Mayor Ron White, who was able to overturn the eviction.

It all started when councilman Elzie Clements, who led the attack on poor Browser, reminded angry townspeople that “city halls and businesses are no place for animals.” The next time the council met, it delivered a landmark 2-1 decision to evict poor Browser. The cat was given 30 days to find a new home.

But when Mayor Ron White caught wind of Browser's fate, he "wasn't thrilled about all [the] mess."

“We've had that cat five years, and there's never been a question,” White told The Fort Worth Star Telegram. “That cat doesn't hurt anybody ... The council just went out and did this on their own because they don't like cats.”

When White subsequently threatened to put the issue of Browser’s residence to public vote, the council succumbed. It reconvened and voted unanimously to overturn Browser’s eviction.

Today, Browser continues living in his library home of over five years and has become a local celebrity. And from the looks of things, he has no idea what a stir he caused.
